[edit] Prediction
Exactly what it says, being able to predict an opponent's next move is an important skill to have in strategy games such as Advance Wars. This also entails checking the opponent's funding, to see what unit options are available to him or her on the next turn. For example, if the opponent has amassed funds instead of buying to the limit on the previous turn, they may be saving up to buy a more powerful unit.
Prediction is also important for the management of one's own army. Even with a funds or field advantage, being unable to purposefully move units to accomplish a goal will often lead to poor play and defeat.
[edit] Rocketlocking
A term coined by the player GipFace, rocketlocking refers to using indirects to enact or deny area control. It is unfavorable to move into the firing range of indirect units unless it is to attack an important unit. Of course, it is generally unfavorable to be within enemy attack range without some form of counterattack at the ready.
[edit] Trapping
Unlike some other strategy games, Advance Wars does not permit units of opposing sides to bypass each other on the field. Because of this, it is possible to surround an enemy unit to prevent its movement entirely. The presence of difficult or otherwise untraversable terrain can also factor into the trapping of a unit.
[edit] Unit Chain
A unit chain is basically that: a steady flow of units that carry out the same function in order to keep up a line of attack or defense. For example, a tank chain is created when a number of tanks can be moved into each other's position in order to attack any enemy units that attack the other tank. Usually the player that sets up a unit chain first will win over the other, but there are various factors to consider that can alter the usability of this strategy such as changes to funds or presence of other units.
